Avoiding the Sunday Blues
I taught middle school for 18 years, and every Sunday around 4:00, the “Sunday Blues” would settle in…that dreaded feeling that the weekend was ending and it was time to face the upcoming week. The inertia was real! I always pushed off any work until Monday, unwilling to give up one second of my weekend time to work. But after years of putting energy into NOT doing something, I realized that not doing the work was actually making the Sunday Blues worse. So, I changed it up and created a new Sunday routine. Before dinner, I would crack open my planner, glance over the coming week’s schedule, and jot down a list of what I needed to accomplish. Eureka! By actually doing what a dreaded (work!), I felt a million times better. I went to bed less stressed and woke up Monday morning knowing what to expect and feeling way more ready to go. So, I encourage you to do the same… grab a pre-dinner snack, put on some good music, go through your calendar, emails, and online class platforms, and familiarize yourself with the week ahead. 20 minutes may do the trick! Know what’s due, where you need to be, and maybe even set an intention for the week. I think you’ll find that you will enjoy your Sunday nights more and feel proud you fought the inertia of the Sunday Blues!
