Desk Trinkets

Desk Trinkets

My desk can be a cluttered mess. Bills stacked up, sticky notes plastered everywhere, and multiple pairs of reading glasses collected in one place. Like most of us, I spend a lot of time at my desk Zooming away and doing life. Because I have such an established, fixed space, for now, I like to keep things on my desk that remind me of how I want to be, like this Stonehedge looking rock cairn. I found it on a walk with a friend. Our weekly walk follows along the most amazingly well-kept stone wall around a beautiful farm with llamas, horses, and a few cows. Feels more New Hampshire than suburban Boston. I learned the lore of the workers making these rocks and hiding them in the stone wall for passerbys to keep for good luck. Our walks became a scavenger hunt! My competitive self became obsessed with finding a rock! Myopic and hyper-focused, after 20 minutes of staring into the nooks and crannies of the stonewall hoping to see my lucky rock cairn, I realized I wasn’t enjoying the walk anymore. I wasn’t really listening to my friend or loving the scenery like I usually do. I was trying too hard, so I  gave up looking…and you know what happened when I decided to give up?!? I found a rock cairn. It was sitting there just for me all along! I was so excited and felt like I had won the lottery.

So, why do I keep this on my desk? Besides reminding me of my lovely friend, it reminds me to not keep such a white knuckle grip on life. Things still happen when you chill out a bit.

What would you put on your desk as a reminder of how you want to be in this world?

Try it.
