Find Your Potato

I learned a cool cooking hack this week: If you accidentally dump too much salt or spice into a chili or soup, all is not lost! Just drop a raw potato into the pot and it will soak up the excess salt or spice. How great is this? A simple potato absorbs the excess and balances out the salt/spice ratio of the soup.

I wish I could drop a raw potato into my head around 7:30 p.m. every night to absorb my excess worry, stress, and tension about the current state of affairs in this world. We are months into learning how to live and manage life in a global pandemic and an intensely polarized political scene. While I have learned to cope, and I do hold out hope for science (not sure about politicians?), I feel my fortitude to cope waning. The profound sadness of losing people and rituals we love consumes me some days.

With so much confusion, uncertainty, and sad energy in the air, it feels unnerving and more crucial than ever to figure out-What is your raw potato?

Consider these questions to help you discover your raw potato:

What brings me joy? And this can be so simple… “My coffee in the morning.”

What habits do I have that serve me well…or maybe not so well?

When do I feel most alive?

What/Who makes me laugh?

When I put my head down on my pillow each night, how do I want to feel?

Keep the answers to these questions in your phone, on the fridge, or prominently placed on your desk/computer. Just remember that these things matter. With so many emotions swirling in the air right now, figuring out your raw potato is key to your emotional well-being!
