In the last year, I have spent a lot of time clearing out clutter from my own house as well as aging relatives’ houses. This process got me thinking a lot about stuff….it’s purpose, our attachment to it and the stories it can tell about our lives. To pare down years worth of belongings, my filter was to ask myself, “Does this object remind me of an event, person or place that evokes what I value and cherish?” I kept my uncle’s chipped, Italian coffee mug. Certainly not the most glamorous of items, but my uncle is someone who always just “got” me and and made me feel good about myself, so I kept it when cleaning out his house. Now, as I sip my coffee, I remember trips to San Francisco, the lemon tree in his garden and his great laugh.
