I See the Farm

January has been a long, hard, and unproductive month for me. I’m a doer and an action taker, but inertia took over this month. The first three Wednesdays of the month had me glued to the news for hours and hours, and to recover from the emotional roller coaster of that, I binged hard on Netflix. It was a weird combination of feeling hyper tuned in the events in our country, yet numb from oodles of Netflix.

I woke up today with a resolve to be okay with my January thus far but also wanting to feel less stuck and drained. When a student feels stuck or kinda tuned out, I often ask them to come up with an image that connects with their weekly intentions and/or goals. Or maybe the image helps form an intention or goal. I think it’s a helpful and creative way for them to see what they want rather than just thinking and making lists and staying “heady.”

So, this is my image for the week. It’s a local farm near my house. It reminds me that:

  • the sun is up longer each day and that helps me feel more energized.

  • barren January actually holds a lot of beauty, so remember to take time to see that

  • soon a lot of yummy food will start growing in those fields, “action” will come

Give it a try! Find a photo in your phone that you really like. Then ask yourself: What does this image conjure up that I want? It’s a creative way to plan and make decisions for the week with an intention and/or goal in mind.
